I’ve never been able to relate to the moms who are somehow able to keep a stark white couch and immaculate marble countertops maintained while young children are roughhousing throughout their abode at all hours of the day. Maybe it’s just because I’m too lazy to constantly clean up after them, but our girls have always played hard, and messy, and that takes a toll on our home. Our floors, specifically our carpets, have taken a beating, and a few months ago I really decided to get serious about new floors for our next home project.

As I began my research, I reached out to my friends at O’Krent Floors, a local San Antonio company with a history that spans over ONE HUNDRED years in our community. Most folks who have lived here for any amount of time know how much they give back to the community, and the wonderful O’Krent family is the purest essence of kindness and hospitality. There was nowhere else I would rather go for our new floors, and they responded that they could have Jason, the nephew of current owners Margie and Sam, out to the house for measurements and beginning the quote process almost immediately!

When Jason arrived to the house (masked of course), he immediately got to work measuring every possible room and surface we were considering placing new floors. I was open to just about any ideas, but one thing I hadn’t considered was converting our carpeted stairs into hardwood. Of course I loved the look on my Pinterest boards, but I wasn’t sure if it would be within our modest budget. Jason assured me it was worth taking measurements, if only for the ease with which he could then analyze different options in their system for hardwood, carpet, and maximizing the use of every possible inch of flooring we purchased.

All in all, Jason spent well over an hour talking with us about options, flooring usage considerations, and educating us on all the differences between vinyl, hardwood, high pile carpet, low pile carpet, the list goes on and on! For example, did you know real hardwood stairs are preferred because they’ll be at eye level for guests entering your home? You want that WOW factor, and vinyl can detract from the overall appeal of hardwood stairs. Who would think of something that detailed except folks with YEARS of experience like the O’Krent family?!

I can’t wait to share even more of what we’ve learned with you all, so stay tuned for weekly updates!

A
