It’s been a good couple of months for our family and San Antonio Magazine! Last month we were featured as a family in their spread for summer fun, and now for July Orlando scored (pun intended) his own interview with Kathleen Petty about his life story and journey so far. Playing basketball has taken him all over the world, quite literally, since he’s in Spain right now playing with the Mexican National Team. And he’s headed to Italy in just a short while to play in the last qualifying tournament before the Olympics! Hard to believe when I first met him we were just kids and now he’s on the cusp of becoming an Olympian! I picked up a hard copy of the magazine for him to see when he gets home, but thank goodness for the Internet so he could already see the photos and read the article. And you can too if you like. 😉

Perhaps most exciting for us was finding out that Josh Huskin would be doing the photo shoot for Orlando’s article. He is by far one of my favorite photographers in San Antonio, so seeing the ideas and concepts he came up with for the shoot was so much fun. Like who would have thought a picture of Orlando eating cereal out of a basketball could have turned out so cool?! We shot outside of Orlando’s mom’s house on the West Side, where she still lives and knows everyone in the neighborhood to this day. I think it will mean so much to Orlando some day to have these photos taken so close to where it all began for him.

Finally, this wasn’t the shot that made it into the magazine, but Josh was nice enough to share it with us after the fact. Cora was running around oblivious to the photo shoot for the majority of the session, but at one point randomly decided to burst on to the scene and try to steal the ball from Daddy. If you know Orlando, you know he wasn’t going to just hand it to her, so the above picture was the adorable result. I told Josh I think we need to get it blown up and printed for our media room! We have Orlando and I’s old WKU jerseys hanging in there, along with a few photos of our college playing days, but this would be such a great addition.

Many thanks to San Antonio Magazine and Josh Huskin for telling Orlando’s story so wonderfully. It never fails to inspire me, and I’ve only heard it 467,066,506 times. To follow Josh’s fantastic photography, check out his website here or his Instagram here. 🙂
