As I type this, the hardwood floors we’ve selected for our home are actually sitting behind me in boxes. They are being installed in just a couple days, and I can’t believe this process is already almost complete. But let’s take it back for just a few more moments, to the day Jason O’Krent (Of O’Krent Floors, naturally), came to the house once more to help us make our flooring selections.

If you remember, we last left off perusing their gorgeous showroom filled to the brim with every shade, style, and color of flooring you could imagine. We were able to narrow things down pretty quickly with Jason’s expert guidance, but as a final step he recommended having the samples brought to the home to be absolutely certain we loved them in OUR light, next to OUR furniture, etc.! It’s easy to see things in a showroom and think, “That’s the one!” But then next to our gray walls or modern furniture, there’s always the risk that it will feel completely off.

We knew almost instantly which hardwood we wanted to use, because we could quite easily see which one matched our current hardwood in the dining room almost perfectly. That was partly in thanks to Jason, who took photos on his first visit to the house and could easily scope out the measurements to give us a price point with all of O’Krent’s technology features. He had a gut feeling on which hardwood to go with, and he was spot on. We also loved that even though our stairs (giving away a little teaser there!) have slightly darker wood on the banister, the color of the floors magically blended between that shade and the dining room shade.

Carpets were a bit more challenging to select, if only because we have a challenging design situation in our home. Our house is in a suburban neighborhood, with very traditional features throughout. Slowly over the years we’ve tried shifting to a more modern aesthetic, so we sometimes have this conundrum of new elements that are our preferred modern taste, clashing with more traditional remnants of the previous owners’ selections.

For example, while we love our gray walls, we weren’t sure if stark gray carpet would then make the brown lighting fixtures seem like even more of an eyesore. I can totally understand know why home projects turn into never-ending domino effects because you realize updating one category instantly makes all the others seem like newly pressing issues! I think we were able to find a happy medium though of selections that are updating our space without forcing our hand to immediately commit to more home updates that we may not be quite ready for.
