Last night, as I sat in my Cancun apartment watching the Oscars red carpet in dubbed Spanish, I was still able to have a few moments of fashion awe and styling horror.  After all, Twitter makes it seem as if you’re right there when celebrities step out of their limos with the instant reactions from fans and fashionistas alike.  And although I changed a few diapers and got a few kids to bed in the midst of the show, I was still able to deduce my favorites and faux pas of the evening.  See if you agree with me below:

THE BEST

1. Cate Blanchett

This isn’t even the best shot of her Armani Prive dress.  I loved the color, the feminine flower appliques, the unique seafoam shade, and the bold shoulders.  Top it all off with stunning jewelry and this looks was my favorite of the night.  Cate always seems to find the perfect balance of a fashion risk and a beautiful dress.  Bravo!

2. Alicia Vikander

There was some debate on the bubble hem of Alicia’s Louis Vuitton gown, but the cheery shade and glam embroidery won me over regardless.  I am also going to instantly copy her beauty look with a chic half-up, half-down top knot.  Sleek, sexy, and soft all at the same time!

3. Brie Larson

Although this Gucci stunner was considered too relatable for many, I loved the sheer details, delicate ruffling, and dazzling belt.  Her berry-stained lip pulled the whole look together and made her look effortlessly glamorous.  So many celebrities chose COLOR this year, and it made me so happy to see! Bring on springtime!

4. Saoirse Ronan

This wasn’t necessarily the most daring look of the evening, but I think what made me fall in love with it was the tribute to Saoirse’s homeland of Ireland, and how grown up she looked!  And while this look could have gone matronly in a hurry, she kept it fun with mismatched earrings and flirty eye makeup.  Nailed it!

5. Daisy Ridley

I don’t know if I’ve been watching to much Downton Abbey, but I was obsessed with this custom Chanel dress and it’s unusual midi length.  The silhouette was certainly unique, which I appreciated, and the grey shade is simply timeless.  This is something I would actually wear, and yet Daisy managed to elevate it to an entirely new level of chic.

THE WORST

1. Reese Witherspoon

Perhaps this is one of those looks that comes off better in person, but the bust simply looked awkward on screen.  I always WANT to like Reese’s looks because she’s just the sweetest little thing, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it this go around. Womp womp.

2. Rooney Mara

There were aspects I loved about this look.  The keyhole front, the intricate lace, the sexy slit, but somehow it fell apart as a whole.  I was hoping to see a bit of a risk from Rooney, but I think this was a miscalculation.  A for effort, though.

3. Kerry Washington

Kerry is normally at the top of most best dressed lists, so this was a bit of a shocker.  The dress just didn’t make sense to me, and as I said on Twitter, it felt like a Grammys look, not Oscars.  The leather made it feel cheap, the weird straps felt like misplace pockets, and then her hair and earrings felt disproportional.  Come on Kerry, you’re better than this.

4. Heidi Klum

Heidi, Heidi, Heidi.  You know better than this, girl.  Marchesa can normally do no wrong, so I don’t understand why there is SO MUCH fabric going on here.  A supermodel should not be covered up in yards of tulle on one side and half her boob exposed on the other side.  The color is gorgeous, yes, but it wasn’t enough to save the entire look.

5. Olivia Wilde

Olivia was one of the first looks on the red carpet, so initially I thought perhaps this was ok.  But as the evening wore on, I kept coming back and liking it less and less.  She looks as though she’s trying out Kim Kardashian’s boob taping trick without remembering to put anything else on.  And then I would have preferred to see a long, slender necklace with perhaps a single jewel at the end instead of a choker that made the whole look seem boxy and cut off.  I love Olivia Wilde, but this just simply didn’t do her justice.

Who were your favorites and least favorites of the evening? Let me know in the comments!

A
