Hair loss is upsetting for both men and women, whether you’re young or old. However, it can be particularly difficult to deal with for women, as hair is seen as a sign of femininity. For some people, it’s a traumatic experience. The good news is that there are some things that you can do to deal when experiencing hair loss.

Catch it Early

The best way to prevent hair loss from progressing too far is to pay attention to what’s happening. The earlier you catch the symptoms of hair loss, the quicker you can deal with it.

Look out for common signs of hair loss. Some of these are more obvious than others. They include:

  • Hair thinning, especially around the parting and crown of the head
  • Patches of hair falling out
  • Broken hairs
  • Hair snapping or breaking
  • Excessive hair on brush or comb
  • Hair can be easily pulled out

As mentioned earlier, these symptoms are distressing. They may be a sign of age-related balding, or of an underlying cause that’s more sinister.

Find Out the Cause

By paying attention to your symptoms and the balding pattern, you or a doctor may be able to work out what’s causing your hair loss. If you know why your hair is falling out or failing to regrow, then you may be able to come up with a strategy to prevent it from getting worse or even reverse the hair loss. Some causes of hair loss are temporary, while others are permanent.

Aging is probably the most common cause of hair loss. Men will experience male pattern balding, which is where their hairline recedes and they will have thinning hair on the crown of their head. Women will find that they mainly lose hair around their parting, as well as general hair thinning.

However, hair loss can also be caused by autoimmune disorders, such as alopecia. Other illnesses, like some parasites, cause specific patterns of hair loss. Skin conditions can create patchy hair. Cancer doesn’t directly cause hair loss, but many treatments do. Finally, stress, anxiety and major hormonal changes (such as childbirth) can cause hair to fall out.

Treating Hair Loss

The good news is that, depending on what causes hair loss, you may only have a temporary problem. Sometimes, the issue rights itself. For example, it’s very common for women to lose their hair after childbirth. If you’re stressed or ill, then this can happen too. However, this will usually pass after the stress stops and your hair will become more thick and full in under a year.

If your hair loss is caused by a specific condition or health problem, then treating that problem can prevent further hair loss or even allow your hair to grow back. This is common with skin conditions. Sometimes your hair will look different when it regrows.

Even if your hair loss is permanent, looking after it will slow the progress. Also, treatments like the ARTAS hair transplant can return your hairline to its former glory.
